The Godfather 
The 1972 American Mafia film, The Godfather, was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and based on Mario Puzo’s 1969 novel of the same name. The film became an immediate hit and has since become an integral part of American pop culture and a must-see in many homes. The Godfather is considered an excellent and highly impactful film and has even been ranked as the second-greatest American movie by the American Film Institute. 

The first in a trilogy, The Godfather is the story of Don Vito Corleone's rise to power as head of an American Mafia family. It follows them through familial challenges and frequently violent "business" negotiations in 1945 New York City. Don Corleone and his family struggle to keep their business and personal lives separate, but are never able to achieve peace in their private lives while they stay in organized crime. 

The Godfather has many quotable lines like “Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes,” and “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse,” as well as iconic scenes like the horse’s head found in the bed that have been mentioned in other works, further cementing this film’s role in American culture.
