Artist Statement:
My work explores the lived experience of extreme light sensitivity and “legal blindness,” navigating the spectrum between sightedness and blindness, a space chronically overlooked despite its profound impact. As an individual with Oculocutaneous Albinism 1, I heavily rely on my environment since my vision fluctuates depending on light, movement, and scale. This experience has shaped my conscious and unconscious mind in ways I still uncover. As I continue to learn about myself and the world around me, I am discovering the profound depth of its impact.
My art manipulates the effects of light, the physical sense of space, and orientation through the use of color, contrast, and pattern, engaging viewers’ senses in a dialogue about perception. As a visual artist who works and lives with a visual disability, my style, process, and finished work is informed not only by personal preference but also by my physical abilities and limitations.
During my creative process, I am in a state of negotiation between my artistic vision and my fluctuating sensory experience, which has led me to develop a unique visual language. This language expands “visual art” into the realm of those who lack proficient sight. When someone views my work, there becomes a conversation and collaboration between their perspective and mine. This collaboration creates understanding, and bridges gaps between the knowledge of people who find themselves on different ends of a vast spectrum.
